Capacity Limits for Spatial Discrimination

چکیده
(abstract) When observers are searching for a single target amongst multiple distracters, accuracy usually decreases with the number of distractors (the set-size effect). Set-size effects have been measured to seek evidence for a limit on the capacity for spatial discriminations. Experiments with unmasked displays have found no evidence for a sensory bottleneck. On the other hand, postmasked displays produce set-size effects too large to be explained by uncertainty alone. When mask-onset asynchronies are short (eg 100 ms), orientationdefined targets frequently seem to be adjacent to their true positions and tilt thresholds increase with the square root of the number of cued items. These results suggest that the mean of an ensemble can be computed when there is too little time to evaluate each item individually. Precues can improve discrimination even in the absence of distracters, but since multiple precues are almost as effective as single ones, most of this enhancement is pre-attentive.

Attention to multiple locations is limited by spatial working memory capacity.
What limits the ability to attend several locations simultaneously? There are two possibilities: Either attention cannot be divided without incurring a cost, or spatial memory is limited and observers forget which locations to monitor. We compared motion discrimination when attention was directed to one or multiple locations by briefly presented central cues. The cues were matched for the amoun...

To measure economic discrimination, one must be able to measure the productive capacity of people, the opportunity structure they face, and outcomes in the form of income and earnings. The first two are difficult to measure but crucial to any assertion that discrimination exists. To illustrate the uses and limits of statistical analysis to overcome these difficulties, two case studies of ethnic...
متن کاملThe impact of regional economic discrimination on tax compliance
This paper seeks to explain the relationship between regional economic discrimination in the form of three indices of need discrimination, capacity discrimination and combined index of tax compliance across provinces for the period of 2002-2016 in three five-year periods. The research model was estimated by GLS method. The results of the model estimation show that there is a significant relatio...
متن کاملThe Effect of Ketanserin and Pirenperone Injected into the CA1 Region on Spatial Discrimination
In the present study, the effect of 5-HT2A receptor blockers in CA1 region of rat hippocampus on spatial learning was assessed in a T-maze, a spatial discrimination task. Rats were canulated bilaterally and injected daily vehicle (saline), 5-HT2A-selective antagonist, ketanserin (0.6, 1.2 or 2.4 µg/0.5 µl) and pirenperone (0.1, 0.3, 1.2 or 2.4 µg/0.5 µl) into the cannula 30 minutes before train...
متن کاملA quantitative method for determining spatial discriminative capacity
BACKGROUND The traditional two-point discrimination (TPD) test, a widely used tactile spatial acuity measure, has been criticized as being imprecise because it is based on subjective criteria and involves a number of non-spatial cues. The results of a recent study showed that as two stimuli were delivered simultaneously, vibrotactile amplitude discrimination became worse when the two stimuli we...
